Coming This Sunday, October 7

October 7: A great earthquake destroyed the ancient city of Colossae late in the first century.  The site has never been excavated and no records survive.  Paul wrote the Christian community at Colossae.  Our NT reading this Sunday, 3.12-17, forms one of the fullest and theologically ordered ethical passages attributed to the apostle.

Coming This Sunday, September 30

September 30: When Jesus steps into a boat the reader must be prepared to get wet.  The evangelist Mark has three boat scenes with the disciples.  In the first two there is choppy sailing.  In the third the crisis is a lack of forethought regarding provisions.  In each set of circumstances, it is Jesus who makes it bearable. Through the centuries the Church itself has been thought of as a ship.  Join me Sunday as we ponder the resemblance.

September 23: Elijah finally confronts King Ahab.  The king says, "So you are the trouble maker in Israel?"  The prophet invites the king and the entire population and all the devotees to Mount Carmel.  He shouts from the summit, "How long will you continue to equivocate; choose God or choose Ba'al. The contest that follows is legendary.  Join  me Sunday as we conclude this series on Elijah.

Coming This Sunday, September 16

September 16: Previously with Elijah, the people of Israel lived and behaved as if God really did not exist.  Elijah called down a dreadful drought and went into hiding.  Fast forward the tape and God directs Elijah to leave his comfort zone and go to Zarephath, present day Lebanon.  This was enemy territory.  God had begun chipping away at the rugged character of Elijah when in hiding at Cherith.  The new location will allow for finishing touches to fit the desert hawk for the looming encounter with the prophets of Baal.
