The Season of Lent
Jerry Warren
Worship throughout the year at Immanuel is focused through the use of the Revised Common Lectionary,
which is planned around the seasons of the Church Year that reflect the life of Christ—Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter and Pentecost. With the observance of Ash Wednesday, on February 17, we enter the season of Lent.
Originating in the fourth century, the season of Lent spans 40 weekdays. It reaches its high point during Holy Week with Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday), Good Friday, and concludes Saturday before Easter. Originally, Lent was the time of preparation for those who were to be baptized, a time of concentrated study and prayer before their baptism at the Easter Vigil, the celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord
early on Easter Sunday. But since these new members
were to be received into a living community of Faith, the entire community was called to preparation. This was
also the time when those who had been separated from the Church would prepare to rejoin the community.
Today, Lent is marked by a time of prayer and preparation to celebrate Easter. Since Sundays celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, the six Sundays that occur during Lent are not counted as part of the 40 days of Lent, and are referred to as the Sundays in Lent. The
number 40 is connected with many biblical events, but especially with the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness
preparing for His ministry by facing the temptations that could lead Him to abandon His mission and calling. It is a time for introspection, self examination, and repentance.
In calling us to introspection and repentance the sermon themes for Lent at Immanuel will follow the
revised church lectionary. We will observe a time of corporate Confession in each service calling us to consider our "missing the mark" in the Christian journey. The Gospel lesson for the first four weeks will be from the Gospel of Luke and in the final two weeks the Gospel of John. Additional readings will come from
various Old Testament books and the Psalms dealing with God's deliverance of his people.
Through these services we will be challenged to recommit our lives to the service of the Lord.
